Patrick McKenzie did some Marketing Consulting for FogCreek this year. Five years ago, Fog Creek was a successful software company. Today, Fog Creek is a successful SaaS company with a sideline in selling downloadable software. This changed the company, but the company didn’t change with it... The website is a shipping software product of the company. It deserves the same level of attention to detail, monitoring, focus, and internal resources that Fog Creek’s other software products get. Revamping the website was only one facet of how we’re pushing forward on marketing. We’re going to talk later about SEO, email marketing, other enhancements we’ve made to our site and products, and a variety of other topics. Hmm, can't find any such updates.

Tim Bray notes Steven Pinker's mention (in Blank Slate) of Donald E Brown's list of Human Universals. Here's the complete alphabetical list, and Jorn Barger sorts it in Evolutionary (Eight Circuit Model Of Consciousness?) order.

Should We Dispense With Happiness? A Review of Martin Seligman's New Book, Flourish. Running through Flourish are two critical themes. The first is that positive psychology - the study of optimal human functioning - must be grounded in the most rigorous science. The second take-home message is one that many scholars pay lip service to but routinely set aside and even disdain - namely, that researchers don't exist solely to engage in abstract intellectual cogitations but have a calling to make the world a better place. A New Gauge Helps to See What’s Beyond Happiness. And why did some people keep joylessly playing bridge? Dr. Martin Seligman, an avid player himself, kept noticing them at tournaments. They never smiled, not even when they won. They didn’t play to make money or make friends. (more)

Khe Hy on Roam Research: A fresh, powerful (and buzzy) take on note-taking. In 2018, Evernote users began migrating to the “all purpose tool” Notion. However, barely a year later there’s a new kid on the block: RoamResearch creating a productivity geek’s own version of East Coast vs West Coast. (more)

Notion’s “angel round” at a $800M valuation 😲 | Product Hunt. Back in January, we penned Notion as one of the startups to keep an eye on in 2019. We also wrote about how our community loves Notion, and reference it as an app that changed their lives. Turns out, they might have been on the nose. Last night, The Information reported that the San Francisco based startup is raising $10M, hitting a wild $800M valuation with its new funding (that it’s referring to as an ‘angel round’). (more)
